The Body’s 24-Hour Clock and Why Your Sleep Matters

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body has a natural 24-hour rhythm where energy flows through specific organs and meridians (energy pathways). Every two hours, one organ system is at its peak, influencing not only physical function but also emotions and overall energy levels.

When your fascia, muscles, or nervous system are out of balance, this natural rhythm can be disrupted. That’s why you might notice yourself waking up at the same time every night; the energy related to that organ system is blocked or imbalanced.

Why it matters for your health:

  • Sleep between 10–11 pm is crucial. At this time, the gallbladder is most active. It helps process fats and supports decision-making. If you’re not resting by 11, you may experience both digestive issues and emotional indecisiveness.

  • From there, energy moves every two hours:

    • 1–3 am (Liver): Deep sleep, dreaming, processing anger/anxiety.

    • 3–5 am (Lungs): Gentle breathing, processing grief/sadness.

    • 5–7 am (Large Intestine): Time to release what no longer serves you (both physically and emotionally).

    • 7–9 am (Stomach): Best time for a warm, nourishing breakfast.

    • 9–11 am (Spleen/Pancreas): Thinking, working, but also worry-prone.

    • 11 am–1 pm (Heart): Connection, joy, eating with others.

    • 1–3 pm (Small Intestine): Organizing, processing insecurities.

    • 3–5 pm (Bladder): Storing and conserving energy; irritation can surface here.

    • 5–7 pm (Kidneys): Replenishing energy, processing fear.

    • 7–9 pm (Pericardium): Time for emotional bonding and self-care.

    • 9–11 pm (Triple Warmer): Winding down, hydrating, releasing confusion.

    • 11 pm–1 am (Gallbladder): Sleeping and regenerating, tied to decision-making and resentment.
